I actually went to Crutchfield, here in beautiful Charlottesville, Virginia, when I was shopping for one and talked to the man who does the measurements for them. He said that they have to be conservative in their measurements because different head units have different connection configurations and where one might fit, another won't. I first bought the one that they said would fit and the sound was terrible. I tried new speakers, but that didn't help it. Finally bought a higher-end head unit and it also sounded terrible. However, when I switched back to the OEM Blauplunkt speakers, I made a startling discovery . . . they're actually quite efficient when you have more power going into them. So I kept the original speakers in front and back, put sound-deadening material in the door (yes, only 1, the passenger side; didn't have time to do both doors before I needed a running vehicle), and put in a sub-woofer to round out the bass end. It's not great, but it's not bad either considering the acoustic qualities of my van. The head unit I finally wound up with is the Kenwood KDC-4015 and it's 6 1/4" deep. Oh yes, it also has a remote control! Good luck John!
