Joel,
I have three things to suggest, each of which was a culprit for me in
somewhat similar situations:
First, renew your grounds in the engine compartment. I once had symptoms
like an uber-Vanagon Syndrome, and they were cleared-up by doing this. Take
the screw out, clean all the contacts using it as well as the body where
they touch with a wire brush or sandpaper, and even put a dab of Vaseline
before you tighten them down again. You probably have more than one
ground - if you find a wire screwed into the body, clean it up.
Second, if possible, try swapping-out the idle stabilizer *module* (behind
the right rear tail light) with another Vanagon owner long enough to test.
Third, but least likely to fix, is swap your ECM (under the bench seat) with
another Vanagon owner long enough to test.
Good luck,
David

Subject: [Syncro] Help! Still hesitating and gasping for air
Hi all, Sorry for the previous post - I was not quite through qevetching
Here it goes.
A few weeks ago I posted a request for help with MY vanagon syndrome.
Gasping for air and guzzling gas without any power!
I'm at the end of replacing stuff on this engine.
I have replaced the Temp II sensor (first culprit). Swapped the Temp I and
AFM (second guess) . New air filter - all clean and dry. Checked the O2
sensor - All Ok per digitool. Catalytic converter is empty so no blockage.
Finally I swapped out the Idle Stabilizer valve. < This really solved
the problem, sort of...
The van runs much better with the new (used) stabilizer valve. BUT, once
the van is warming up I still get hesitations and loss of power plus
spitting and coughing.
When the van finally gets to normal operating temp and it runs OK but
could be smoother.
Help! I don't know where to look or what else to change, and I'm done
cussing.
Any help will be greatly appreciated and should go down the Anals of
Vanagonology.
Thanks all,
