I feel I have to contribute to this thread since the other folks have
done it differently than myself.
yes, I agree that pulling the left front headlight assembly will help.
and yes, I agree with pulling the ashtray to make getting at the back
of the radio easier.
But I also pull the dash instrument cluster out (it's not all that
hard, and this allows for fishing the new radio cord from the antenna
over to the radio with ease.
There are two types of antenna you can use. A "beetle" style antenna
(cost about $7) or the real OEM style (cost around $45). The main
difference is that the OEM style retracts all the way, while the beetle
style will leave a 12" stub when pushed down. There is also a
difference in that the Beetle style (old Beetle by the way) doesn't
have the tube that extends down and is vastly easier to put in that the
OEM style.
Before you think that the price difference is important, consider
whether you'll ever use a car cover on your Vanagon. If you don't, then
the cheap $7 antenna is the way to go. If you want to use a car cover,
get the fully retractable OEM style as you won't want to cut holes in
your cover.
