Volks,
Had some down time while waiting for the RoadHaus to get out of the shop
in Los Osos, CA.
So I scouted out a couple of local State Campgrounds.
Although I generally prefer more remote, undeveloped and if possible
free facilities, I would consider a short stay in either of these
campgrounds. Either place would make an excellent stop over for those
traveling PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) Route 1 in the vicinity of Morro
Bay, CA. Montana de Oro is the more remote of the two.
Los Osos Area ... Montaña de Oro State:
A few miles South West of the little town of Los Osos, this neat 8,000
acre park is nestled in the foothills overlooking the ocean. Tons of
hiking trails meander thru rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches,
coastal plains, streams, canyons, and hills around the 1,347-foot
Valencia Peak. There are also mountain biking and equestrian trails. The
best-known beach is Spooner’s Cove, across from the campground. The
park’s name, "Mountain of Gold," comes from the golden wildflowers that
bloom in spring. Wildlife in the park includes black tailed deer and the
black oystercatcher.
The Camp ground looks to have approx 50 spaces. Most are of the paved
back in variety with a fire pit and table. Basic toilet facilities are
sprinkled about ... but no showers are available. The spaces are off a
one way single lane road that winds a mile or so form the main park
street.
The camp ground are across the road and a fair hike from the ocean and
beach.
Current Fees: $7.00 per night
Morro Bay Area ... Morro Bay State Park:
A nice developed camp ground located very close the city of Morro Bay.
Features lagoon and natural bay habitat. The bay’s most prominent
landmark is Morro Rock. The park has opportunities for sailing fishing,
hiking, and bird watching. A great little park museum has exhibits
covering natural features and cultural history, Native American life,
geology, and oceanography. The park also has a colorful marina and an
18-hole public golf course. On the bay’s northeast edge is a pristine
saltwater marsh that support thriving bird population. A really pretty,
peaceful area.
The campground looks to have approx 100 spaces. All are nestled in a
shady forest just across the street from the backbay. Each space seems
to have a grill and table. Restroom and showers facilities are within
the campgrounds.
Current Fees: $13.00 per night
