There is a park in the London area that is widely known as the place for tourists (mostly Australian) to buy VW campers for a road trip through Europe. They go there to buy one, then return there to sell it after their trip. I don't remember the name but probably someone else on the list might know. On the other hand this is a bit risky, as you don't always know what you'll find or what shape it might be in. After all, the same VW campers change hands a couple times a year, each owner knowing he only needs to keep it running for a few months or a year and then he'll be selling it.

When Evon, myself, and our daughter Haley (then 5 months old, now 4 years) did a month long road trip through Europe, we considered buying a camper, but decided to rent from a company in the Netherlands (Campange (sp?) - not sure if still around but at some point I posted a link and name to the list so it's in the archives). The security element was the reason for our ultimate decision. We got a nice Eurovan diesel poptop camper for about $1200 a month, fully stocked and with road club coverage and a guarantee that they'd reimburse for any breakdowns. And we didn't have to worry about what we'd buy or how easily we'd sell it. This was worth the money in our minds. Had we not had a 5 month old, we almost certainly wouldl have gone the buying/selling route (or perhaps even backpacked it with a Eurorail pass), but then again the rental was so easy and worry-free (and cheap compared to hoteling it) that I don't regret it, and feel I got my money's worth. We flew into Amsterdam but out of London. The proprietor met us at the airport for pickup. To return it, I paid for the proprietor's train ticket, put the camper on a ferry the night before we left the UK at my expense (minimal), and he picked it up at the port in Amsterdam the morning that we flew out.
