Dear Vanagon friends. Thank you all for your suggestions and help in diagnosing my Vanagon problems. I resolved the problem by taking the suggestion of a faulty idle controler valve. I had a spare unit and cleaned it up and replaced the existing idle valve in the van. It started right up as always and this time when it warmed up it did not choke or gasp for air. This was the problem a idle valve.

Thanks you all and thanks to this list.

Joel
