Yes, tha actual "click" detents are in the transmission. The lock (push button) operation though is in the shifter. Check both ends to make sure cable movement is not restricted. If you never went below "D" before, it is also possible the cable is failing.

Here's one I can't find in the archives...

My AT on a '88GL won't physically go into 1st or 2nd gear. It shifts fine thru the gears when in "D", but I just can't move the lever down any further to "1" or "2". I believe the detants are in the AT itself and not the shifter, is this true? Changed the ATF and filter yesterday, nothing unusual or obvious. I couldn't see any thing that would physically blocking the cable.
