It's also really difficult (to the point of almost being impossible, with used parts) to get the exhaust headers to seal properly to the head on these engines. BTDT. The best advice I've seen is to take a long file and file across both flanges until they're flat and parallel to each other. It seems that with time the weight of the exhaust causes them to bend inward slightly. There's not much room for error when you're using copper rings as gaskets and skinny studs to cinch them down. There's lots of discussion about this in the Type 2 archives.
