David, On my 82 diesel to gti conversion I removed the stock battery tray. It was badly corroded and it sat right where I wanted to mout the airbox/fuel distributor. I bought a generic battery tray at a f.l.a.p.s. and mounted it with some custom bracketry about a battery's width forward of where it originally was positioned. Worked great, plenty of room.
