Altghough I agree the metal backing is not necessary it does make the job easy and future inspections if needed easy too. Here in California there are plenty of junk yards where one can find the metaql backing.

Just remove the drivers one, measure the hole and cut same size hole on passenger side. Do not worry about the metal backing as used on the drivers side. I've put them in without the metal backing and it works just fine. Run wires from passenger side across the headliner to your new light. Make sure you get the wires on the correct terminals so the three switch positions work as they do on the drivers side.
