In the overall scheme of Westy / Vanagon storage the tools required can be carried in the compartment under the drivers seat with plenty of room for your spare parts. I carry a set of 7mm-19mm combination wrenches, a 3/8 drive socket set with 7mm-19mm shallow sockets and about three screwdrivers, a tri square CV bolt tool that fits the 3/8" drive ratchet. It doesn't hurt to carry a few extensions and a small set of 1/4" sockets for tight places. In an emergency there are always the 'I wish I had' cases but in eight years of running my air cooled over 150K the only parts and tools ever required on the road were to remove the valve covers and adjust the idle. The most important thing that I carry is enough oil for an oil change and a spare fan belt.
