The top side. The steel spring is on top of the core itself. I found out
where to drill by looking at the new ignition core that I had in my hand. I
could see the steel spring on the top of it, placed the core next to the
ignition housing and "guessed" about the right location to drill and voila.
I put the key in the new ignition core and that helped me "orient" the new
core to the old core and housing to determine alignment. When the core is
"in", the key orientation is not vertical, it's tipped left and that makes a
difference in locating where to drill.
