I feel I have to contribute to this thread since the other folks have done it differently than myself.

yes, I agree that pulling the left front headlight assembly will help. and yes, I agree with pulling the ashtray to make getting at the back of the radio easier.

But I also pull the dash instrument cluster out (it's not all that hard, and this allows for fishing the new radio cord from the antenna over to the radio with ease.

There are two types of antenna you can use. A "beetle" style antenna (cost about $7) or the real OEM style (cost around $45). The main difference is that the OEM style retracts all the way, while the beetle style will leave a 12" stub when pushed down. There is also a difference in that the Beetle style (old Beetle by the way) doesn't have the tube that extends down and is vastly easier to put in that the OEM style.

Before you think that the price difference is important, consider whether you'll ever use a car cover on your Vanagon. If you don't, then the cheap $7 antenna is the way to go. If you want to use a car cover, get the fully retractable OEM style as you won't want to cut holes in your cover.
