Could your pulleys be reversed? I bought my vanagon with pulleys for the
water pump on wrong. PO drove it from NJ to Ohio, wholesaler drove it from
Ohio to Minnesota. I drove it from Minnesota to Orange County. While en
route to Orange Country from San Marcos in San Diego County, the belt
finally shredded and I was standed in the rest stop in Oceanside... I think
the PO told me the water pump was replaced at Pep Boys.
