I've been following the engine conversion posts for a several years now and while everyone seems happy with the power and over all quality /dependability of the Tiico there remains a constant issue with "vibrations" and "resonance" along with exhaust issues and problems with the alternators coming lose. I would love to buy one of these rock solid inline fours but so far it appears to me that the wasserboxer is still the best match for our transmissions and especially those of us with automatics. I suspect I'll get some feedback from the list on this post so while I'm at it....seems to me that some of the most successful conversions over the years have been those who have acquired the appropriate components from a diesel vanagon and pulled a Golf or Jetta engine from a bone yard and done it themselves. I myself would love to have a diesel or Audi 5cyl mated to my westy automatic but that doesn't look like it's practical. In the case of the diesel to automatic our list member Helmut has pretty much explained to me the impossibility of hooking the diesel to the T3 automatic (unless I'm a Berlin cabby!) and I've not found any good examples of 5cylinder audi engine conversions in vanagons but I've heard of a few disasters though. So.....since I love my 84 westy and will keep it for many years to come I think that next time it's Boston Bob and the replacement of all the hoses that I haven't already replaced along with all the other electronic engine components. The 1.9 isn't so bad. I don't have to go fast..hell, its a VW buss and I need to slow down a bit in life. Just have to keep that coolant changed, and water pump, and hoses, and................ ;- ) Bob 84 westy das bus |
