I believe (and I've also read) that the more you use one, and especially the more you use one on normal engines, the more things wrong you can hear with one. There certainly are some remarkable noises inside that you never hear just listening to the whole thing. With a bit of practice you could have someone touch it to things behind your back and you'd be able to say "alternator -- oil pump -- water pump -- valve gear" etc. david
