Hello all,
My bucking and hesitation problem started on my 89 syncro westy right after Thanksgiving here in Western New York. The outside temp dropped to the 20's and has not warmed much above freezing since. I was attributing some problems with the damn salt on ther road and the moisture causing shorts with all the sensors.
I have since replaced all the sensors and idle control valve and still get a tiny bit of hesitation/bucking as the temp goes from the white mark to the middle. Once in the middle at normal operating temp everything is fine and no more bucking.
So I would say that there is some temperature dependancy if you also have poor grounding.
I am at whits end and ready to swap the ECU as the next and final thing to replace.
Maybe the ECU is temperature dependant and not the sensors?

This is an interesting question. If I recall, the first reported
diagnosis of the "Syndrome" was by a tech in Europe somewhere and he
reported that it occurred in cold weather. I don't remember where I
read this, but I believe that his initial reports led VW to develop the
official "harness" fix.
The temperature part really hits home with me because the three times
that I have encountered the problem with my "91 have all been on trips
north into Wisconsin during the winter. I have tried Heet, etc. and it
has not helped. The capacitor fix did seem to help considerably.
I have never found any explanation as to why the temperature should
make any difference, however, and many people apparently don't notice
any relationship.
