There's also a book called "The Alaska Highway" by Ron Dalby, a former editor of Alaska magazine and a former editor of mine. One of its greatest strengths, as I recall, was a detailed description of each of the lesser known approach highways. I just checked Amazon and it's out of print but available for less than $5. I'd also agree with John Rodgers that The Milestone is essential. That shouldn't be hard to find either. Surprising number of past, present and future Alaskans on this list.
