It helps a lot to set the can of refrigerant in a pan of warm water. Assuming you have the can right side up to feed gas into the low side, as the liquid in the can vaporizes it absorbs heat energy, cooling the remaining refrigerant so that it vaporizes more slowly. I let it go in gradually, watching the pressures on the gauges, but as I recall it doesn't take more than about 5 minutes for a can. The biggest temperature change, air out compared to air in, on my '91 is about 30 F, with about 40F for the lowest output. 100F in : 70F out 80F in : 50F out etc.

The tunnel on mine fell down. (Yes I know there was a recall) I don't care for it blowing in my face. This way it is tempered by mixing with the warm air as it comes forward and we don't bang our heads on the tunnel when sleeping, etc. in the back.
