For r-12 in an r-12 system it does not sound typical.  They should check
for leakage before recharging, e$pecially if they're putting in r-12.
  r-134a is said to seep out faster if it's in a system with hoses
designed for r-12.  The O-rings tend to flatten out and leak at the
connectors often at the compressor.
