Subject: headgasket replacement information

The devil is in the details the archives miss. When installing a headgasket is it safe to say that you need not apply the tube of sealer to the green rubber rings. I was going to apply a very small amount of grease to get the green coolant ring to seat in what appears to be a very tight slot on the outside of the cylinder sleeve. I was also going to apply a small amount of the copper gasket shellack to hold in the metal seals that fit inside the head that the cylinder sleeves make contact with to form the combustion seal. The tube of sealant I was going to use on the big rubber gasket that the head mates to and the head nuts. I see that the fit, the big rubber gasket makes to the lower part of the engine is good and requires very little sealant. The weak point is the fit of the big gasket to the flat part of the head. I was going to apply sealant to both the head and gasket. Any suggestion would be appreciated as I would like to so this right the first time. thanks gary
