It may not be the best practice, but I use two pairs of pliers (make sure they are insulated) to grab the two terminals and lift it straight up. When you put the new battery back in, use a piece of nylon webbing wrapped around the battery like a strap to lower it into place and leave it there. The next time you have to remove it, you can just use the strap. Wal-Mart and camping places sell this stuff. Or if you have an old ripped up back pack or duffel bag, cut you off a piece.
