Check all your fuel lines immediately. Fuel leaks can cause nasty fires in vanagons. Inspect each line for hose clamp tightness, wetness, and any wear. Checking clamps for the wetness is easy. Wet and there is the problem. Chafing is more difficult. Inspect every inch of the hoses. I had one of mine chafe through on a road trip. I'm really surprised and grateful I din't have a fire.

If your hoses are original or haven't been changed since you purchased the van, replace all the fuel hoses. An 85 model is 18 years - read my lips - EIGHTEEN years old, and so is the rubber in the hoses. I replace mine every three years, after the last episode I went through.
