Brian, my man, if you smell fuel, you have a leak. Since you have an '85 which I have to assume is 2WD and if there is no evidence of leakage from ANY of the numerous connection in the fuel delivery system, you might want to check the fuel tank for rusting. The 2WD fuel tanks are notorious for rusting through in the area of the valley formed into their top surface. I had one rust out all too soon; dead at the tender age of 7 years

When the pinholes become large enough and numerous enough, filling the tank to the utter brim will leave little doubt about the source of the leak. Of course, if you are sure that the van has spent its life in the Mojave, you can ignore all which I have said.
