The benefit is likely limited to the fact that the filter is reusable.

This benefit could be weighed against the neccessity of using harsh detergents to clean it every 50-100K miles, and re-oiling it for use again. IMHO, I'm not sure which is best environmentally. The K&N is cleanable, reusable, and comes with a cool sticker! A normal filter is throw-away, but cheaper by far. The K&N uses harsh chems to clean and re-oil, the normal one is replaced more frequently.

Perhaps it just depends on what you like to do with your time. :^)
