The old-timers on list know I'm not a 'jury rig' kind of guy. In this case though I have jury rigged a solution to this problem on three VW's, to great happiness.

The problem is thus: imagine for a moment the exact area where the absolute edge of the windshield is inserted into the 'labia' of the windshield seal. When new, the windshield edge bottoms out in between the labia. In time the labia retreat ever so slightly, and eventually a leak forms, typically at the top since the windshield sits in the bottom of the seal. Water runs inside while you drive (as rain rolls up to the top), runs to the bottom of the seal, drips out behind the dash, and onto your toes. Look closely at the bottom of the seal and you can see where it has been escaping.

Solution (jury rigged): $4 tube of Goop(tm). Yep, a tiny smear of Goop caulking around the edge of the windshield will seal the problems. You can't see it, if you do it right, and it works great.

If you aren't a jury rig person, have the windshield pulled and a new seal installed. It's your money.

I just noticed the same thing in mine. Indeed, in the lower driver-side corner of the windshield, I can see water dribbling in.
