Jeff,

I just drive home in my most recent acquisition. 1.9td with an air-cooled tranny. No electronics -- just glow plugs. To fit a diesel inline engine to a formerly waterboxer equipped van, you need to use an adapter or simply get a diesel bellhousing. Some converters are offering Overland's upright diesel conversion for WBX vans. IIRC that conversion uses an adapter plate. The earlier conversions simply used the Vanagon diesel bellhousing so that the engine can be tilted to clear the rear lid. The upright conversions require a raised engine cover.
