I made the mistake of using power steering fluid in my '85, and it started
leaking like crazy.  I have since replaced it with ATF that has a sealant in
it (for older cars), and the leak has stopped.  I am left wondering if the
specific chemical makeup of the rubber seals reacts to/with the ATF to stay
soft and fluffy.

It pays to pay attention.
