I assume your talking about converting to 134a.
  I did this on my '91 with reasonably good success.  It's not as cold
as some original units, but plenty for me.  I have to add about 1 can
per year; this may be because the smaller 134a molecules seep thru the
hoses or because my system still has a slow leak.
  If I recall, it took some searching to find adapters that would fit
easily behind the C pillar cover and under the engine lid.  I replaced
the receiver-dryer and the O-rings in its connectors.  I dismounted the
compressor to drain out as much of the mineral oil as possible and
replaced the O-rings there also.  I put in ester type oil (guessing at
the amount), in the compressor and the dryer.  Used a real gauge set
($80 ), pumped it down for a couple of hours with a good vacuum pump.  I
think it took about 5 cans to get the system to cycle and blow cold air.
