I've never known exactly what caused the air-lock inside the fuel
tank and maybe Bob has solved that question...thanks Bob :)
I have had the same symptoms on 3 different occasions now over
the past 5 or 6 years ...the fuel tank going woosh when opened
and the tank going woomph after I stopped driving.
Trying to locate the source of the problem lead me to the charcoal
cannister (behind the RH rear wheel) and the two small vacuum hoses
(the purple one & the white one) that lead from the valve on top up to
the intake manifold and the throttle body (or whatever it is)
Anyway, assuming (perhaps wrongly) that charcoal from the canister
was blocking the valve or one of the lines,I would remove the canister
and the two lines from the vehicle, shake the cannister to loosen any
blockages, then run a thin wire thru the two plastic lines to clear out
any possible blockages.I'd also blow air thru the valve to clear out
any obstructions.
Each time after doing this proceedure, the symptoms dissappeared
and didn't return for several years. When they did,a repeat of the above
sorted it out again.I never knew exactly what part of what I did actually
did the trick but hey,it worked and only takes about 15 mins from start to
finish.
Before replacing anything, maybe trying this is worth a try...?
