Please understand I'm not calling anybody a car thief in this post.
I recently saw a network broadcast about popular cars that are on the top
of the list with car thieves.
They showed some Honda, Toyota and a couple of others and stated that the
cars could be upgraded with bolt in conversions from newer high
performance models.
This particular group was using the engines in street racing and seemed
to know exactly which cars to steal to get the most horsepower into their
lesser vehicles.

I have no doubt that there are conversions being performed by many
individuals as you read this post.
Engine conversions are a popular topic on the Vanagon list and many
people are considering them, many have done conversions and are happy
with the results.
There is probably a good reason that your Vanagon or Westy is still on
the road.
I'd speculate that the vehicles were good quality when they were built
and the first owner probably drove them until they became maintenance
intensive. (That is how I got a one owner Westy, needed lots of little
things and an engine).
Those that are going to do a conversion are just going to do it.
What I say here will have no bearing on what action they take.
I just envision stock Vans, Vanagons, Syncro still on the street and
functioning properly while the conversions are long gone to the great
forge in the sky.
The actual outcome of this conversion frenzy remains to be seen.
I feel that I've seen some of it when Vanagons with conversion engines
are selling for less than their stock counterparts on the VW Buy/Sell
sites I've been to.
