I have made up custom O-rings with a kit such as you describe, The O-ring
was a 50cm diameter, 15mm X-section silicon ring for one of the fermentors I
work with. Obviously such a sized O-ring is not a common stock item,

It was a matter of careful cutting then gluing. I would imagine it would be
very tricky without some sort of jig to make smallish rings.

Finding a source of metric O-rings (silicon or butyl) is not always easy.
