Pure propane is something like 120 octane equivalent, but a few states mandate that it be mixed with someting else that makes it around 100 octane and reduces the BTU per pound. I think that California may be one of the mixed propane states. I am thinking of converting my pickup to propane on the next rebuild, but my Vanagon is keeping me to busy to do anything with it right now.
