If this is like the temp sensor on the aircooled ones, there are two ways it can fail.

If it fails shorted, you'll have trouble starting the engine cold (it will be too lean.) I suspect that's not the case if the plugs are wet.

If it fails open, the engine will run very rich. It'll start fine, but will flood out and die once it gets warm.

A quick test on the aircooled motors, with a cold engine, was to disconnect the connector and see if the engine would start.
