When I had a 2WD, I would place a couple of bags of "anti-skid" over the rear axles. "Anti-skid" is the term used by a local contractor supply house to designate 1-B crushed limestone. It is the size of peas and smaller with sharp edges. They would half fill an empty 100 lb. flour bag (which the kept on hand for such things) and charge me about $1.50/100# for the stuff. I probably would have 250 to 300 pounds in the back of the van. The great thing about anti-skid ballast is that whenever you do eventually get hung up, just grab some of it and broadcast it under the wheels.

In my former life, I found the anti-skid and a long handled flat shovel, NOT a snow shovel, to be necessary accessories for winter driving.
