George, in all my 30 years of Alaska driving, I never found it necessary to carry a shovel, or use anti-skid, or have chains or studs, even for my "68 Bus, UNTIL I bought my first Vanagon. With that beast, the studded tires were the only way to go. After that, never any problem with it in winter.
