Well, I have an '81 Westy with auto trans. I live at 4300' or so, and frequently drive to areas 2500' lower or 4000' higher, both within 100 miles of here. My auto does fine. It downshifts on hills, and does slow down some, but often no worse than the rest of traffic (when there is any).
