...And this is also my experience as well. My '85 GL is dreadful in Iowa Snow. After a few frightening experiences on snow and ice, I've resigned myself to using my '96 Passat GLX with nice, gripping 50 series all weather tires. Now that car, despite my love-hate relationship with it, is virtually unstoppable in snow. When the SUVs are blown off the snowy road in high winds on I-80, the Passat is rock-steady.

Maybe the Vanagon models with the alloy wheels and the fat tires are better.

I don't know about the rest of the Vanagons, maybe you got a special one, Kim.

Mine (1982 Westfalia, with 2056 cc air-cooled) is perfectly happy to spin the tires when even the slightest spritzing of snow is in effect. Far unlike our 1976 bus, which would climb moderate grades in the snow, our Vanagon can't climb a speed bump, even with M/S tires.
