My '87 Westy has worn a nose mask (politically correct term for the new millennium) since it was brand spanking new. Although sand, grit, and other environmental accumulations collect around and just inside the edges of the bra, sorry, nose mask, it has not been to the detriment of the underlying paint. If the paint did get scuffed, hey, it's covered by the "the-accessory-that-must-not-be-mentioned" anyway, so no one will see it.

Up here, north of the 49th parallel, the nose mask comes in handy when it comes to protecting the rad from the Genuine Canadian Winter. Tucking a patch of exterior grade vinyl fabric between the mask and the rad keeps the rad warm, which means there is warm air for the anaemic interior heater.
