My vote goes to Red Top Mountain State Park between Acworth and Cartersville. Stone Mountain itself is lovely (carving aside), the park is something akin to a Confederacy Amusement Park. It IS closer to Atlanta's center, however. If you like cycling, Red Top is not too far to access points to a jewel for Northwest Georgia, the Silver Comet Trail (40 miles from Smyrna to Rockmart complete with 700 ft tunnel, lovely span over Pumpkinvine Creek, etc).

Chris, you said,

Stone Mountain Park Campground, (public) 770-498-5710. Located inside 3200 acre historical and recreational park, including: antique auto museum, "paddlewheel" riverboat, antebellum plantation, scenic railroad, skylift, etc.
