Damon,

Welcome to my world. My fiancee is pretty much a hippie as well and she wants a KG very badly. So I have actually been looking for a fixer upper for her. The nice part about my little hippie girl is that she grew up living and working with her mechanic father and wrench-head brother - so she can atually do a lot of the work herself. As a matter of fact most everything I know about fixing/working on cars I learned from her and her dad.

Thank you,

Jeff Lincoln

My girlfriend, whether she likes it or not, is a hippy. A modern hippy, but a hippy none the less, and as such, thinks Karmann Ghias are the cutest cars in the world. Now couple that with yesterday being her birthday, perusing ebay for doublecabs, finding a good running '65 KG only 20 miles from our house... what do you get? An impulse bid! Well, i actually placed the bid, but she made me do it! (yeah, right). To make matters worse, we won it.

Now we have a pearl white ghia that needs a little clutch work in the driveway. Which, of course, makes for happy hippies.

So now what do i do? Rebuild the 2.1l i was going to put in my '84 westy, or get the ghia ready for daily driving? I've forgotten how, um... organic it is to drive an almost 30 year old oxyboxer vw.

I guess i have an actual question, too... what is the best way to ease a mechanically inept girlfriend into the world of auto mechanics? Any tips for this one?

Happy friday to everyone, and the moral of the story is you might just get what you bid for...

-damon
