you totally ignore the reason people want to repower their vans.

They (and I am one of them) want the body and suspension of the VW (the only good bits), for durability, safety and handling. They want a drivetrain which can give both reliability and performance (VW gives neither). They are not interested in resale value. Heck, they could if necessary pull the drivetrain and sell it separately.
