you totally ignore the reason people want to repower their vans.

They (and I am one of them) want the body and suspension of the VW
(the only good bits), for durability, safety and handling. They want
a drivetrain which can give both reliability and performance (VW
gives neither). They are not interested in resale value. Heck, they
could if necessary pull the drivetrain and sell it separately.

How can gross IMPROVEMENT be bastardization? We're making silk purses
out of sows' ears!
