It's standard procedure in snow country for any vehicle that's light in the back -- pickup trucks for example. Vanagon definitely benefits from a few hundred pounds of sand or what-have-you in the back. Another trick that will get you moving in many conditions is to let the driving wheels down to ten psi or so, other wheels too if actually sinking in is a problem. 'Course you have to be prepared to pump them back up again, and treat them with great delicacy in the meantime.
