Over the past few weeks ago, my van started acting like the throttle switch was acting up again. The idle would be high @1500 during cold running and be slow to drop rpm after the gas pedal is lifted. I could pop the throttle and it would drop, like the switch is stuck. Gas mileage had also dropped. Tightening up the AFM increased the mileage a bit though. At times the idle would stay at about 1500 rpm for a few seconds before dropping. It has in the past, lost the small gap just off idle that turns the engine management to the ECU from the Idle control module. Well, I checked the gap and it seemed to be functioning correctly during several tests over a few weeks. Well, I had some extra time off from work and for what ever reason decided to check out my NEW 9 month old VW German injectors... Well, one was leaking with large constant drops after the power was shut off ... the source of my high HC emission testing. I checked the exhaust and it smells good now... When I would blip the throttle, the excessive fuel was sucked into the engine and would cause the idle to drop. The ECU also was trying to lean the mixture out due to the extra fuel and power was off some. I will have a new injector in by middle of the week and all will be right in the Vanagon world ... until the next part failure... If you are having idle problems do not assume your injectors are working correctly, test them to make sure they work correctly.
