When I replaced my clutch due to a shot pilot bearing, I used a round flat-nosed punch to break the outer bearing shell. I placed the punch against the flat surface of the shell lip and drove it with a hammer parallel to the shaft. A few good whack later the punch cut through the shell and I was able to pry out the bearing with a screwdriver. No damage to the transmission.
