Why not try a mini clamp around your under van shifter rod, with a pull spring to keep lateral tension on the rod; just tie the other end of the spring with some bailing wire until you see if it works. Something like an after market throttle return spring should be strong enough for the test. If it works you can upgrade it as necessary to a better installation.
