While either seat can be mounted on either side they are in fact right and left specific. As to whether the difference amounts to much may be open to debate but VW made them different for a reason. If you mount the passenger seat in the driver's position the lever for adjusting the seat track position is in close proximity to the parking brake handle. This means that while sliding the seat forward your hand may strike the parking brake lever and possibly become pinched between the seat release lever and the parking brake lever.

The passenger seat has both adjustment levers on the right side. The driver's seat has only the tilt lever on the right and the slide lever on the left.
