Chris and list,
I have done a few Tiico's installs as well, and several 2.1L installs over
the years. I also have driven the 2.1L Big Valve engine made by Boston
Engine.
One thing for sure..........if you are putting in a TIICo, for you want more
power than a stock engine, you will get it......some more. It by no means
turns into a rocket. A little better accelaration from stop.....a little
better up hills and mountains, but still the vanagon is a big heavy car with
a small engine anyway you slice it. You always have a transmission designed
to turn higher rpms at higher speeds at 75 for example you go like 4200rpms
in a vanagon. That is a lot of rpm's compared to differnt vans.........I
recently drove some newvan that was turning 2500 rpms at 70 with an
automatic trans! Also, it had a 4. something liter engine.
One thing for absolutely certain. If you have a TIICO put in and need
engine work done by someone or some shop that is not familiar with it, you
are going to be told "Sorry can't help you". You had better be prepared to
stay on top of your car, have the vag-com software, and diagnose/fix your
own stuff. Mechanics are a strange bunch these days, and do not have the
willingness to work on a type of vehicle they will only see once. This is
the cold hard truth. If they can't punch it into their diagnostic system
and get an answer they won't fool with it.
I pull my own wrenches on my vehicles and others for a living, and with that
in mind, would only put in another 2.1L or a big valve........less
headaches, is turnkey, and no dealing with a desk jockey naked Petar for
every little thing they forgot to include in the kit or that goes bad.
Not everything that comes with it can be had straight from the dealer
folks............it is not that simple.
The TIICO is a step in the right direction, but look before you leap folks.
If i was hell bent on changing the motor to something different, I would but
a much bigger motor then that...........the possibilities are endless.
