...or it could be that the little circlip on the end of the speedo cable where it passes thru the centre cap was not replaced or has since fallen off. Sounds exactly like when the clip goes missing and the cable end catches/slips/catches/slips in the square little hole thingy... BTW,it is always worth putting a little blob of silicone or similar goop over the end of the cable & circlip after repacking or replacing bearings. This keeps water or moisture from ever entering thru the hole in the cap and shortening the life of the front-left wheel bearings...
