Just to reiterate a question/observation in the " '99 SA Vanagon pics" thread in case some people are not following both this and that thread:

As I understood it the long exhaust system on the SA Vanagons was the cure for the unwanted vibration/resonance. In the photos of the 99 Vanagon the exhaust can be seen to run forward from the engine about half way to the front of the bus then make a 180 degree turn back toward the rear and then exiting the rear. In the middle of this exhaust pipe is the muffler mounted under the sliding door--way up front by North American Vanagon standards--then the pipe carries the exhaust out the rear. That would add about 6 feet of exhaust pipe up and back at a minimum.

I'm no engineer, but of course there is a reason for all this "extra" exhaust pipe. If not to quiet the system, what then? Now granted the 99 photos are of the 5 cyl. Does anyone know if the SA in-line 4 cyls have the same extensive exhaust?
